Mark Brown of the Sun-Times did a little digging into a “charity” called “Bill Lipinski’s All-American Eagles” set up by, you guessed it, retired Congressman Bill Lipinski.
Bill Lipinski is the same fellow who retired his position just in time for his son, Republican-leaning Dan Lipinski, to be “annointed” to the seat a few years back, as political commenter Russ Stewart put it.
Many thought this turn of events odd since the Younger Lipinski hadn’t lived in the district (let alone the state) for years. Despite the fact it’s a Congressional office, not a throne, Lipinski the Younger has been the incumbent Representative since then. Both Lipinski men run under the Democratic banner, despite the Younger’s record of voting with Republicans on important issues. The district itself went 59% for Kerry in 2004 so it’s true blue, not DINO blue.
Turns out that this Lipinski charity — which is supposed to help kids — is actually helping out Lipinski the Elder (in the form of currying political favor) and his own kid, Congressman Dan Lipinski, whose political fund received at least $1000 from the “charity”.
From a recent fundraising solicitation sent by the Elder Lipinski:
The All-American Eagles program has included various events for middle school youngsters throughout the years, including an art contest, track and field meet, bicycle races, spelling and history bees and other programs designed to build the confidence and poise of young men and women. The All-American Eagles program is open to all young people in the 7th and 8th grades who wish to participate.
Sounds great, no?
Problem is instead of helping 7th and 8th graders have athletic fun and challenge their minds the money raised looks to have been funneled to political patronage. Mark Brown notes this “charity” (which, in Lip’s defense, is clearly set up as a non-tax deductible political account) has sent funds toward:
- a car lease for Bill Lipinski
- $1000 to the Congressional campaign of his son, Dan Lipinski
- $500 to Republican State Sen. Christine Radogno’s failed state treasurer campaign last year
- a whopping $5,000 straight to the Mike Madigan-run Democratic Party of Illinois
- and even rent for the lobbying office that the Elder Lipinski started up after he retired
Yoda, posting at Prairie State Blue, notes that this “charity” also funneled thousands of dollars to Lipinski family political consultant Jerry Hurkes. Mr. Hurkes worked for the Congressional staff of Bill Lipinski before also being hired by sudden-Congressman Dan Lipinski. Mr. Hurkes is also the tough guy who started roughing up a Lipinski political opponent while she was videotaping a speech by Dan Lipinski (h/t Proviso Probe publisher Carl Nyberg).
As both blogger Yoda and reporter Mark Brown dug through this group’s finances, they found little money actually being devoted toward its stated purpose. Instead, the dollars appear to be divvied up among politicians and friends who have themselves done little to advance the causes of junior high extracurricular activities like athletics, art, and trivia bees.
It’s disgusting when Republicans and conservatives set up fake charities to pad the wallets of themselves and their friends and it’s disgusting when people pretending to be Democrats (their actual records speak differently) try to get away with it too.
Shame on you Lipinskis.
To learn more about Dan Lipinski’s current real opponent for the upcoming February primary (as opposed to the placeholders who’ve endorsed him in the past but are now mysteriously coming out against him), you can read up about Mark Pera.
State’s Attorny Mark Pera is an actual, honest progressive who just wants to do right by his family and his neighbors in that district and who has been endorsed by local area organizations.
Mr. Pera has even coached youth athletics in the district and served on the boards of various civic, religious and charitable groups — so he knows a thing or two about charities that are supposed to be for kids.
(I didn’t intend for this to turn into a quasi-endorsement for Mark Pera but after seeing that he coached kids sports and served on charitable boards it seemed important to note the contrast between challenger and incumbent, or at least ‘incumbent’s father’.)

While I certainly don’t condone the Lipinski’s, nor the Bennett’s (Republican in Democratic clothing), nor the Caperelli’s (who?), but I certainly don’t condone the Pera’s either.
And I feel compelled to post this given the “quasi-endorsement”.
Pera ran for the IL House on the same ticket (sp?) as former Cong. Bill Lipinski.
He received over $100,000 in support from Chicago Machine-controlled campaign funds (Madigan and Lipinski).
http://www.elections.il.gov/CampaignDisclosure/D2Semi.aspx?id=122876
Then after he lost the race, he conveniently got a high-paying job with the Daley-controlled State’s Attorneys office.
I say write-in!
DISCLAIMER: I don’t live in the district, and I live on the north side.

Wow Jimmy … Those are some astounding
“facts” you’ve got there … But something smells like baloney.
Thanks for the link — makes it easier to debunk your malarkey. Pera rec’d only $500 from Friends of Lipinski back in ‘96 — not $100,000.
As for the other money he raised, a lot of it actually came from suburban Democratic organizations and clubs. Mike Madigan isn’t exactly Mr. Suburban. Did MJM control the House Dem fund? Sure. But Pera also got money from the Senate Dem fund… again, not in MJM’s control.
Maybe next time you ought read the stuff you post before posting it.
(And I don’t live in that district either. I’m in the land beyond O’Hare.)

Wow Robnesvacil.
Oh. I get it. Sarcasm. So witty….
But something smells like ignorance.
Regardless.
Oh, yes. The Illinois Democratic Party and the Illinois Senate Dems and the Illinois House Dems are NOT controlled by the Chicago Machine. Springfield is soooo Democratic.
BTW, that was sarcasm.
Yes, the good people of Illinois have full say in how those funds are distributed.
Sarcasm again.
The point was and is that the Chicago Machine fully funded Pera’s 1996 failed campaign.
Look at the accounts (see below) and what went into Mark Pera’s failed 1996 campaign. Feel free to add it up with your calculator because the VAST MAJORITY came from Democratic leadership funds (see below).
Next time perhaps you ought to read the stuff and learn the stuff before you post anything.
Or better yet, read the posts a little more closely before ad hominem criticisms based on faulty and naive interpretations.
Again, there are NO options in IL-03.

Jimmy,
Nice try at muddying the waters on Lipinski’s behalf but you’re own selected copy and paste job proves my point that your attacks are weak at best.
In your listing above you include several groups which are clearly not controlled by the “Machine”… And besides, the above amounts aren’t the total Pera raised in 1996 — meaning that he also raised funds from outside what you’re considering to be the “machine”.
Just a for instance, since when is the national Democratic Senate Campaign Committee in Washington, DC controlled by Mike Madigan?
No one’s saying that Pera’s 1996 (1.9.9.6.) campaign for state lege wasn’t funded by groups that Madigan had some say over but (a) Pera’s campaign was not solely funded by such groups (again, according to your own copy and paste of his D2, as well as the more complete full info on that 1996 D2) and (b) this ain’t 96 and Pera isn’t being funded by those same groups in 2007/08.
You can hardly say there are no choices in the 3rd. Or are you trying to claim that OpenLeft, DFA, Blue Majority, etc. are all controlled by MJM? (Heck, some of the local DFA’ers that have endorsed Pera for 2008 have openly sparred with Madigan.)
Get real. Pera’s no Lipinski and he’s certainly not controlled by whatever’s left of the “machine” (which has lost quite a bit of its power in the past 11 years).
What a weak argument.
PS: You wrote… “Yes, the good people of Illinois have full say in how those funds are distributed.”
Why would the citizens have say over how private, political funds are distributed in the first place? Do the Dems have say-so over how Tom Cross spends his House GOP fund? Political funds are political funds — the party leaders decide where they go to best help campaigns. Sometimes they’re right; sometimes not. (Which is why it makes sense that, gee, the “Illinois House Dem Majority” PAC would be funding a candidate of all things.)
Do you get your junk talking points from a Cracker Jack box or a fortune cookie?
If this 11-year-old info is the best the Lipinski campaign has they’re in for a world of trouble on Feb. 5.
